Domaine Barmes-Buecher Gewurztraminer Rosenberg

2007 Domaine Barmes-Buecher Gewurztraminer Rosenberg

Region: France > Alsace
Grape: Gewurztraminer

"Pale yellow. Cured meats and spices on the nose, lifted by peppermint oil. Broad, lush and voluminous, with a silkier texture than the Herrenweg as well as a stronger mineral component. There's a slight youthful austerity to the flavors of pear, mirabelle and lichee that argues for some bottle aging. Finishes with an element of white flowers that was not apparent on the nose. More complex than the Herrenweg but not as immediate."

2009 Chad Chardonnay Napa Valley

Region: California > Napa

Grape: Chardonnay

"Pale green color. Bright, vibrant ripe apple flavors, restrained and mineral, laced with well-integrated new French wood. Rich and tightly wound on the palate, high-toned, speaking to its cool climate setting, firm, chiseled. Excellent freshness and structure on the finish. Drinks beautifully out of the gate, but will continue to gain weight and complexity with 5 years of aging."

Vellum Cabernet Sauvignon

2007 Vellum Cabernet Sauvignon

Region: California > Napa
Grape: Cabernet Sauvignon

"Dark purple color. Bright, vibrant, mouthwatering aromas of crushed cassis. Rich and lush on the attack with a brilliant velvet, suave mid-palate packed with dark red fruit and currants. Fine, long and persistent on the finish. We spent 3 days with the 2007 Vellum Cabernet and it didn't move an inch -- arguing for a long stay in a cool cellar, if you can wait that long. Drink now for the primary fruit hedonism or age for up to a decade."

Domaine Corsin Saint Veran

Wine Reviews

2008 Domaine Corsin Saint Veran Vieilles Vignes

Region: France > Burgundy > Macon

Grape: Chardonnay

"Pale green color, with slightly closed aromas of green apple, a touch of wood, and wet stone minerality. Bright and vibrant on the attack, with a deep -- at first -- unyielding core of green apple. Firm, sturdy, chiseled on the finish. 2 hours later: Opening, showing off more of the rich fruit kernel on the nose. Filling out on the palate, powerful, with fine green apple flavors, excellent viscosity and length. Day 2: Just 1/3 of a bottle left -- we weren't sufficiently patient -- now opening into much more of a concentrated mouthful of Chardonnay. Not sweet, but honed. Not opulent, more tightly wound and mineral. This will age forever -- if you're willing to wait."

Benoni Chardonnay

Wine Reviews 8/13/10

2009 Benoni Chardonnay "Petits Grains" Sonoma Coast

"Bright, pale green color. Intense, wound up mineral aromas of green apple, wet stone, lightly laced with new wood. Firm and fruity on the attack, it's the deep mineral fruit kernel that tells the story of the tight, irregular clusters, the high elevation and Monsieur X's deft hand with Chardonnay. Fine and long on the finish with mouthwatering acid balance. Drink now for the sheer fruit purity or age for up to 5 years in a cool cellar."

Stolpman Vineyards Syrah Hilltops

2007 Stolpman Vineyards Syrah Hilltops Santa Ynez Valley

"During the elevage of the 2007 Syrah Hilltops Estate (100% Syrah) the fruit is passed over the lees of the Roussanne used for the L'Avion. Cropped at 1.5 tons of fruit per acre (from the vineyard's highest peaks), this beauty offers sweet blackberry, honeysuckle, and black cherry notes intermixed with hints of smoke, chocolate, and espresso roast. This inky/purple-tinged wine boasts a superb texture, sweet, velvety tannins, and a long finish. It is an intriguing California Syrah that offers a style mid-way between a classic Central Coast Syrah and a wine from the northern Rhone (such as Cote Rotie). Consume it over the next decade."

Arnot-Roberts Cabernet Sauvignon

Wine Reviews 8/05/10

2007 Arnot-Roberts Cabernet Sauvignon Clajeux Vineyard Chalk Hill

"($80) Opaque ruby. Pungent cherry-cola, mulberry, licorice and dark chocolate on the nose, plus a zesty note of cracked pepper. Sweet, sappy and full-bodied but lithe, with deep dark berry preserve, cherry compote and chocolate flavors complemented by a hint of licorice and a subtle cola note. Finishes with outstanding lingering sweetness and fine, dusty tannins. This wine gained energy with aeration and should be a fine cellar candidate."
