Foxglove Cabernet Sauvignon 2007

Foxglove Cabernet Sauvignon 2007

Region: California > Paso Robles
Grape: Cabernet Sauvignon

"Foxglove also scores highly with their 10,800-case cuvee of 2007 Cabernet Sauvignon. A blend of all-Paso Robles fruit and composed of 94% Cabernet Sauvignon and the rest Petiti Verdot and Cabernet Franc, the wine has a dense ruby/purple color and plenty of black fruit intermixed with loamy soil undertones, licorice, and spice. The wine is luscious and. medium to full-bodied , with silky tannins and a heady, opulent finish. Drink it over the next 2-4 years, although it could last a lot longer. These are absolutely spectacular bargains from the very high-quality Varner Winery in the Santa Cruz Mountains. This is their less expensive line-up of wines, and I encourage readers to try them – they are true winners."

Chateau Faizeau 2003 Montagne St. Emilion Vielles Vignes

Chateau Faizeau

2003 Montagne St. Emilion Vielles Vignes

Region: France > Bordeaux > St-Emilion
Grape: Bordeaux

"This top-flight estate, run by Dr. Alain Raynaud’s (of Quinault l’Enclos) sister, may be the finest vineyard in Montagne-St.-Emilion. It consists of 25 acres of old vine Merlot planted on a limestone/sand plateau. The average age of the vines is 50 years, although some were planted in 1904. The 2003 reveals figs, overripe black cherries, black fruits, scorched earth, and smoke characteristics along with marvelous fat and density. It is an up-front, in-your-face style of wine to drink over the next 5-8 years."

"The impressive 2004 Cabernet Sauvignon comes primarily from a hillside vineyard above Lake Hennessy as well as Howell Mountain, Spring Mountain, and a tiny quantity from Mt. Veeder and Oakville. "A dark, rich, ripe Syrah that defines the California style, and preserves the fine structure that this cool-climate region lends to red wines. The wine is dry and tannic, and the flavors, of blackberries, cherries, blueberries, dark chocolate and sweet, smoky oak, are just delicious. Now and for a few years. Editors' Choice."

2005 Brancaia Il Blu

2005 Brancaia Il Blu

Region: Italy > Tuscany

Blend: 50% Sangiovese
45% Merlot
5% Cabernet Sauvignon

"Everyone loves a wine like this: The aromas are soft, penetrating and remind you of chocolate fudge, spice, spresso and black currants. There’s precision and a careful balance here between softness and power. The tannins are supple and smooth, yet the wine extends deeply throughout the palate."

93 Points--Wine Enthusiast

"Crushed flowers, raspberries and sweet toasted oak waft from the glass as this beautiful wine reveals its feminine personality. The red fruit turns darker on the palate, where leather and spice overtones add further complexity... with well-integrated tannins, notable persistence and commendable balance."

"This blends fruit from Goat Trek Vineyard and the higher elevations at Grist Vineyard on Bradford Mountain, a combination that creates a bright, sunny zin with red fruit and spice. Saintsbury Carneros Pinot Noir

2006 Saintsbury Stanly Ranch Carneros Pinot Noir

"Here the nose is every bit as complex as the Brown Ranch with really lovely and attractively subtle spicy red and blue fruit aromas that display a touch of cranberry before merging seamlessly into detailed, pure and delicious medium bodied flavors that possess a dusty and ever so slightly edgy finish that is presently on the youthfully austere side that comes up just a bit short relative to the Cerise."--89 Points--Burghound.com

Winemaker's Notes:The modern viticultural history of carneros begins on Stanly Ranch in the 1950s when Louis Martini who then owned part of the historic property began a clonal trial of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay with UC Davis and another historic California wine family, the Wentes. The well-known Martini and Wente clones of Pinot noir and Chardonnay emerged from these trials and were propagated and sold by the Wente grapevine nursery.
The historic ranch of Judge Stanly greets visitors to the Napa Valley as they drive up Highway 29 towards the city of Napa and anchors the southeastern corner of the Carneros. The fourth incarnation of grape vines on this property began in 2001 with the development of 350 acres of vines using modern clones, spacing and vertical trellising on the property's clay-loam soils and gently rolling hills. Saintsbury has purchased Stanly Ranch fruit since the 1984 vintage and during the last 20 years it has been a significant source for the Carneros Pinot Noir and Reserve bottlings. We have now come full circle with the Vineyard Series Stanley Ranch one of the successors of the Reserve Pinot Noir in our Pinot Noir lineup.
