"This wine has a huge plummy nose with some cherry, leather, tobacco, and a touch of menthol. The flavor profile is distinct with tons of sweet, tasty plums and rich velvety leather. This was a "wow" wine for me which is hitting its stride right now. The immense tannin presence suggests another 15 years of life, yet the wine is totally approachable right now and you won't be sorry you opened it. The finish lasts for at least 45 seconds. "Almus is entirely from the famous Caldwell Vineyard, source of Phelps Insignia, Viader, and Selene reds, and a region in Napa with at least 3 weeks more hang time than valley floor, thus adding a layered, mature component that is still not overly ripe. Rich and enticing, made of 100% Cabernet Sauvignon, the 2005 has more heft than typical, but still offers the perfumed nose and the sense of grace and elegance that is the Almvs standard. It is ready now for complete enjoyment but cellar-worthy nonetheless. Only 228 cases made."

"A very strong effort from Lagrange in 2006, this estate’s tendency for including a nearly overwhelming oak component in its wines has been tamed in this cuvee, resulting in a better-balanced, potentially complex offering. A deep opaque purple color is followed by aromas of espresso roast, subtle pain grille, black currants, and cigar box. Full-bodied and surprisingly powerful for a 2006, with outstanding purity, texture, and depth, patience will be required for this beauty. Anticipated maturity: 2013-2027."

"Casanuova delle Cerbaie’s 2004 Brunello di Montalcino is gorgeous in this vintage. A firm, structured, Brunello, it offers up attractive scents of smoke, grilled herbs, (French oak) and leather. Today the wine comes across as needing bottle age, as the elements aren’t quite woven together as finely as they will be with some time.
